Dear Cable: I’m on the verge of breaking up with you
posted by Morgan on December 24, 2009
Dear Cable,
I'm tempted to leave you, but you make leaving so hard. With all of your 300 channels, on-demand content like free movies, re-runs of The Office and Mad Men, and original content like the Deadliest Catch, it's easy to see how I'd be longing for you if I said goodbye. I've been tempted to leave you for the Web. Don't be shocked. You should read what others are saying about you. Here's just a few things that been tempting me to leave:
- You're expensive. I spend nearly $900 a year on you (excluding extra add-ons like movie rentals). You're not "on" enough for me to justify that expense.
- I don't watch all 300 channels. I probably watch only a handful of that.
- I don't need you to entertain me for every second of my free time. I've got others in my life like my MacBook; the Internet, sites like Hulu.com, YouTube, iTunes; and a Google Reader list full of blogs to fill any feeling of boredom. (Not to mention a bookshelf full of unread books.)
- Leaving you isn't as hard as you've made me believe. There are others who got out by taking the time to invest in the essential products to make the transition from cable to the Web smooth. I learned about a man who moved on with the help of a Mac Mini, a cool looking hand-held loop mouse, and a wireless keyboard. He seems satisfied without your cable box living on top of his TV.
Don't fret yet. I'm not totally convinced to leave you. There are still things like Boxee's set-top box that will make me wait before I decide to leave.
All the best,
Morgan
