Doing Your Part

posted by Morgan on October 29, 2008

These days, it's becoming a bit more challenging to keep up with the changing landscape of the media. New publication formats and reporters transitioning to new publications demand more responsibility from PR professionals to keep tabs on beat writers, so that they can deliver the right story idea. While you can keep track of journalists simply by staying on top of the news, having more than one reliable resource is a smart idea. The traditional PR databases like Cision and social networking sites like LinkedIn and Facebook help to keep up, but there are also other useful sites proving to be just as helpful. A colleague of mine recently came across a great site called BeatBlogging, which allows journalists to talk about and learn how to use Web. 2.0 tools in their reporting. The topics range from how journalists use Twitter to discussions on which tools are appropriate for which beats. For PR professionals, this site is a great resource to learn journalists' top-of-mind items in a world where readers consume information through so many different channels. As journalists are under more pressure to deliver stories in more than one format (print, blog, video, Twitter), researching and pitching targeted stories can only help a journalist out. Do your part!
