Cutline Speaks
Extending Myself
posted by The Cutline Team on May 12, 2008
Since at least 98% of my workload goes through my browser I use various extensions to control my workload and computing environment. Add-ons really demonstrate the benefits of an open source browser like Firefox. Here are a few of my favorites:
Foxy Tunes - Controls iTunes from a small dialog box in the bottom corner of the browser. I'm so used to switching my music through this when I'm in another program I always look to the corner to change the song.
Send to Phone - A handy plug in from Google labs that will send text from a webpage to a mobile phone. Great for quickly sending phone numbers and addresses to a friend (or yourself).
TinyURL Creator – The name says it all – takes a long URL and creates a short link that is copied directly to the clipboard. Paste the new link and move on. No more clicking through the TinyURL website.
Tab Effect – A purely aesthetic extension, Tab Effect switches between tabs by rotating each one like a cube. A visually different way to sort through different projects in the browser.
Beyond my favorites, there's so much more to explore. A great place to find some of the most interesting is Mozilla's recommended add-ons page - you'll be surprised by what you find. I'm amazed by the creativity and specificity of some extensions. If you have any favorite extensions, let us know about them!
