Cutline Speaks

For the tech-savvy mother

posted by Michael on May 6, 2009

As I'm sure all you dutiful sons and daughters out there are fully aware, Mother's Day is on May 10 this year -- and May 10 happens to be this upcoming Sunday.

My mom is pretty tech-savvy (she has an iPhone and an HP TouchSmart PC, and she keeps in touch with her kids using texts and Google Talk), so this year my brother and I splashed out for a digital recipe reader from Demy (Mom is also a talented amateur chef).

And while I don't spend much time in the kitchen myself, I have to say -- this thing looks pretty cool:

It's a touchscreen device, and it’s "kitchen-safe" -- so while you probably wouldn't be able to get away with accidentally knocking it into a sink full of water, it is designed to withstand all the splashes and splatters usually associated with serious cooking. It also features a timer, a measurement converter, and a list of ingredient-substitution suggestions. You manage the recipes on the device by using http://keyingredient.com/ and then synching it using a USB connection.

As far as I can tell, the only things missing here are web access and a media player, so you can Google things like "What the heck am I supposed to do with Monkfish?” or What does ‘chiffonade’ mean again?

Any other good gift ideas for techie moms out there? Weigh in below in the comments section.
