GDGT Launches with SF Party
When a queue forms around the corner and down the street hours before an event starts, you know the party is a big deal. I'm not one for queues, but thankfully we didn't have to wait for long and were able to join over 700 people with Ryan Block and Peter Rojas for the launch of GDGT earlier this week. For those who aren't familiar with GDGT (like "gadget" or g-d-g-t), it's a new technology site started by former Engadget reporters (Block and Rojas) that combines editorial gadget reviews with social networking. According to their description, the core of the site is structured around the social community with personal profiles, discussion boards and community reviews. By focusing on these social tools first and foremost, GDGT is poised to connect gadget lovers with their fellow community while also providing them with useful, contextual information to help them get the most of the products they already own as well as helping them find the next hip device to add to their collection.
The crowd talked gadgets and tech while wandering around the DNA Lounge checking out out some of the latest gadgets from Toshiba, HTC and Blackberry. Our group, tech geeks that we are, split up and found each other throughout the night to demo new gear. The GDGT crew was also giving away some fun gadgets:
First ~500 get a gdgt t-shirt + sticker, and gdgt iPhone case from Incipio
Sonos bundle
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90
Sony Walkman W
101 SanDisk 2GB microSD cards
50 SanDisk Ultra Backup USB drives (16GB)
20 SanDisk Sansa Clip players (up to 8GB)
TiVo HD + 1 yr service
3 Zune 8s (with custom gdgt etching)
Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player
Ryan Block addresses the crowd
It was a great event and we're looking forward to working with the GDGT team! In the meantime, you should follow them on Twitter: @PeterRojas, @RyanBlock and @gdgt.
