Giving it an Old “Collage” Try!

posted by Morgan on January 21, 2010

When I was a young girl I used to spend endless hours making collages using pictures torn out from my older sisters' fashion magazines. Today, a guilty pleasure of mine is to spend a chunk of my free time reading fashion blogs. One of the themes I noticed splashed across many of my favorite fashion blogs were these cool-looking digital collages. My guess was that the bloggers "borrowed" these images from a magazine's online site because the images looked just like a collage pulled from a page in Harper's Bazaar. Taking a closer look at the collages, I learned that most of them were Polyvore. I clicked over to Polyvore, and I learned that the site gives fashion enthusiasts the tools to make these collages or "sets" as Polyvore refers to them.

I tested the site to help me find an oh-so needed military jacket. The sign-up process is like any niche community site these days: it requires you to sign in, fill out personal information, and then upload a photo. The really good stuff, like building the sets, was a pretty simple process to learn. The site has a search box so you can easily filter the categories based on the clothes you're looking for. I had a bit of a hard time using the search box, which seems to be one of the main tools on the site. But, I'm a novice set designer, so I imagine with time I'll become more comfortable navigating the site and learning tricks to do fast, efficient searches. What's especially cool, but I didn't realize this until my second time building a set, is the Polyvore bookmark clip that you can use to "clip" images from around the web. This feature lets you save the images to "my items" so you can build a library of your favorite images. Very cool.

Overall, it's a lot of fun and definitely "highly addictive."
