Cutline Speaks

Happy 21st Birthday, Liz!

posted by Shannon on April 1, 2010

This is not a joke. Today is Liz's 21st birthday. While we haven't asked for the details of her birth, since it's not a requirement to be a rock star intern, we have wondered if her parents were in the same room when they realized they were about to have a baby. I mean, really, what if her mom called her dad and he thought it was an April Fool's Day joke? As we reflected on that, we also started thinking about our own coming of age (well, of legal drinking age) celebrations. So, in honor of Liz's 21st birthday, we present you with the Cutline Crew's recollection of birthdays past.

One of us had a 21st birthday so wild it's not suitable for the interwebs! We hear it took place across the pond but the details stop there. Perhaps when we take Liz out for happy hour to properly celebrate this milestone, we'll get the full scoop. Another Cutliner also got a stamp in the passport celebrating her 21st. But this time the fun took place in Germany in the middle of Carnival . This Cutliner, appropriately dressed in costume, was serenaded by a bar full of costume-clad locals doing their best to belt out the happy birthday song in English.

Back in the States, another Cutliner, whose birthday falls so close to Halloween that we think it's her favorite holiday, was busy working on the Gore campaign when the time came to celebrate her 21st. Crazy party animal that she is, she drank a beer with the campaign staff and then went back to licking envelopes all night. Hard to top that, you say? Nope. One of us cruised America's Venice on the Edelweiss celebrating the good old 21st in "the good land." Now, we wonder... was that *really* in Milwaukee? In fact, it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."

Moving on from politicians and seafarers, and lands far away... someone lived it up in Sin City style and crashed (ahem, she *claims* she was invited but we haven't confirmed that at the time this post was written) a party-in-progress featuring none other than L'il Jon. Sadly, all of his music videos on YouTube are NSFW but if you don't know who he is, there's always Wikipedia. One of us lives by the age-old motto "work hard, party harder" and started doing so on the night of the party-only 21st birthday... then ended up missing the last train home and sleeping in Grand Central Station. And one of us remembers "most of the night" but claims "nothing too exciting" happened. Yep. We believe it. Not.

Perhaps we'll be able to update this post with the adventures of Liz on her 21st... but in the meantime, we wanted to wish her a big, fat, fabulous birthday celebration! Happy birthday, Liz! Oh, and sorry about that little joke we played on you.
