Honestly, how did people plan weddings before the Internet?

posted by Rachael on December 7, 2009

Hurray! I'm getting married this summer! I've spent the last several months as an engaged person and have already learned that when it comes to planning a wedding, it takes a village. My mom, my bridal party, my family, my fiance's family -- we're all working together to create a wonderful weekend for my guests and the thing I keep wondering is how anyone did this without the Internet? I would be one stressed out bridezilla without it.

I thought I'd share a couple of my favorite Web tools and resources I've discovered so far:

  • Etsy: Any time you want to do something a little different, a little more whimsical than the average bride, head over to this darling craft site. I worked with this Etsy designer to create my one-of-a-kind save-the-dates inspired by vintage post cards. I've also been perusing Esty for cake toppers.
  • Gmail, Google Docs, and Spreadsheets: I'm in PR (and Google's a client), so it's difficult to imagine planning an event of this magnitude without a detailed plan full of assigned tasks in Google's spreadsheets. The best is having access to my wedding planning in the cloud so no matter where I am I can show a vendor or a friend what I'm thinking about.
  • Wedding Wire: There are a lot of options for a wedding Web site but I went with Wedding Wire because they allowed me to password protect my site. I also like how intuitive adding pages to the site is (I need extra pages about where to stay and things to do because I'm having a destination wedding). They've also partnered with cool designers like Wedding Paper Divas on Web site themes so there are cute designs available to help you personalize the site even if you know nothing about Web site design.

Lastly, it turns out that there are about a bagillion wedding Web sites and blogs out there where you can get DIY tips and ideas for flowers, decorations, etc. A couple of my favorites include the OnceWed blog and Snipped & Ink.

Happy planning!
