MySpace Celebrities

posted by The Cutline Team on May 6, 2008

About a month a ago, the New York Times carried an article about MySpace striking a deal to turn its "MySpace Music" site into a joint venture with three of the music industry's top companies. These companies are expected to digitize all of their music catalogs and make them available for downloading online. MySpace is finding a new niche to provide social networking for independent artists, and I imagine it will open up a world of possibilities for the new wave of Internet celebrities who have become so popular.

On that note, I am amazed at how one person can become such a phenomena online. Take for example my all-time favorite MySpace find, Leslie Hall. She has become famous for singing about gem sweaters, gold spandex pants and the Midwest. She currently has more than 50,000 friends and has nearly one million pages views on MySpace. Recently, she has been featured in CNN, NPR and Wired. I am also proud to say have been to two of her concerts in San Francisco, which both have been sold out. Next up for Leslie is a European tour this fall.

As Leslie Hall becomes more of a celebrity offline, I am excited to see how the transformation of MySpace Music will impact the many artists online. In the meantime, check out Leslie Hall and other Internet celebrities as they sing "We Are The Web".
