PARK(ing) Day Today in SF

posted by Meghan on September 18, 2009

Four years ago, a San Francisco art and design group called Rebar converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in an area in San Francisco that is undeserved by public open space. That project was named PARK(ing) Day and has now become a worldwide, independent, movement to bring attention to the way urban space is being used. According to the group, up to 70% of San Francisco's downtown outdoor space is dedicated to vehicles, while only a fraction of that space is allocated to the public realm.

It was a perfect day for some temporary parks downtown with a temp of 91 degrees in the city. Most of the temporary parks are on Mission Street starting around 1st. The people I spoke to said they'll be at it all night with food, bands and games so check it out if you can!
