Cutline Speaks
Public Display of Musical Affection…
posted by The Cutline Team on June 23, 2008
I have always been a fan of movies like Teen Witch and She's All That, where all of a sudden everyone in the scene breaks into a fully-choreographed song and dance. One night, I was sitting around with a group of friends and we started talking about how cool it would be to bring one of those scenes to life. After about a month of planning and three weeks of rehearsal, we rounded up 40 people from dance and non-dance backgrounds and produced what we called The Union Square 5-minute Musical.
Here's how it all went down. At 3:45 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, three guys on bikes with souped up sound systems roll in. Bjork's "Oh So Quiet" beings to play and random people from all over the square start forming a circle in the middle of the square. Once the group is in place, everyone starts full out dancing and singing along to the song. Five minutes later when the music stops, all the participants go back about their business like it never happened.
Yep, it was just like in the movies, but even better because I got to do it! Here's some footage of the dance. Enjoy!
