Reddit Opens Up

OpenReddit.JPGSocial media sites and content aggregators may be commonplace on the web these days, but there are still lots of things to love about Reddit. The site's user interface recently underwent a few changes, but its core features have remained the same – 'Redditors' can still submit links to any content, title their submissions with unique headlines, upvote and downmod other people's submissions and comments, and index content into smaller categories called 'subreddits.' But this week Reddit took a huge step forward to ensure a continued progressive evolution: they've made their code open source and available to any interested developers.

Take it from me, an enthusiastic Redditor – this is a really smart move, and part of a larger trend among successful sites to make the code available. As VentureBeat points out, among the submissions from technophiles posting about the newest gadgets or political junkies posting on the latest from the campaign trail, there is a huge community of programmers and developers that hang out on Reddit. When these folks aren't talking about the developer community itself, they're talking about ways to make Reddit better. Now Reddit has put the power to improve the site in the hands of its community, and since no one loves Reddit more than those who use it, we should start to see even more exciting innovations in the world of social media very soon.
