San Francisco Mobile 2.0 Meetup

Attended the latest rev of the San Francisco Mobile 2.0 Meetup earlier this week. The event was held at the Orange Labs offices in South San Francisco, and the topic was enterprise mobility. We had short presentations from seven different companies: MyCaption, Boopsie, Funambol, Skydeck, Xobni, Ribbit, and Salesforce.com.

All the presentations were great, but the two that really stood out for me were MyCaption and Skydeck. MyCaption -- which is currently available for any BlackBerry device running OS 4.2.1 or higher -- enables you to compose emails, notes, calendar entries, and more using only the device's voice input. You speak your email into the phone, MyCaption transcribes it, and then you get a chance to review for accuracy before it's sent. Cool stuff!

Skydeck enables you to manage your calls, voicemails, texts, and contacts from the desktop. There are other services out there that do similar things -- Google Voice, for one -- but one of the things I really like about Skydeck is that it allows you to reply to texts and even calls from the desktop, while making it appear to the recipient that the text or call is coming from your mobile number.

Skydeck co-founder and CEO Jason Devitt also discussed the company's intentions to work location into the service -- opening up functionality like the ability to go back into your logs and see where you were when you took that call, or sent that text, or listened to that voicemail. As someone who's frequently required to think back and reconstruct entire workdays in his memory (thank you, timesheets), I have to say: Having that kind of location record would be pretty rad.
