Social Media: What You Need to Do About It Now
posted by Morgan on December 8, 2008
Become an expert. Why? From President-elect Barack Obama being referred to as the first social media president to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom posting his State of the City address on his YouTube channel, social media campaigns are all around us. If politicians are incorporating Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter into their campaigns, you can expect that any company looking for PR help will expect you to be an expert on this topic. What to do now? Most importantly, start using the technology. Use video to better tell your story, whether it's an explaining an issue or a product demo. It's easy (and cheap) to do. Try Twitter, and definitely follow journalists who are already twittering - or request them as friends on Facebook. You can also sign up for a course. There are a lot out there, including this one here. At Cutline, we're constantly learning and honing our social media skills with Twitter, YouTube and Cutline Speaks. Nothing better than trial by fire!

Ellen McGirt’s cover story in Fast Company The Brand Called Obama is the best article I’ve read on how Chris Hughes was the campaign’s secret weapon...bringing with him a mastery of the human side of social networking that has translated into real results for the campaign.
