What is technology?

posted by Lauren on January 14, 2008

Though everyone is familiar with the term technology and can easily “spot it when the see it,” defining the word proves a bit more difficult.  When you hear someone say technology, what comes to mind?  According to Wikipedia, technology is “a broad concept that deals with a species’ usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects a species' ability to control and adapt to its environment.”  Which seems to be basically anything man-made then.  Dictionary.com comes up with 9 definitions, most a variation on “the practical application of science to commerce or industry.”  Again, not the most specific or easily digestible description.

Personally, when I hear the word my brain automatically jumps to something electronic – a device hooked up either wires or batteries.  Granted it’s a narrow view, but working in the consumer tech industry can impact one’s perceptions.  So what does the word technology mean to you?
